Doña Calaca Branding and Packaging Design

about.

Doña Calaca is a fictional local Mexican restaurant created for a school project. Located in Oshawa, Ontario, it is known for serving some of the best spicy tacos, accompanied by their delicious homemade hot sauces created by their owner known as "Doña Maria". Looking to expand its market and increase revenue, the restaurant recently decided to begin selling its homemade sauces in grocery stores.

To achieve this goal, I created a complete brand identity for the restaurant, including logo variations, graphics, patterns, typography, and a colour palette, as well as various deliverables all following the same creative direction and maintaining brand cohesiveness.

Brand Development

Inspired by Mexican folklore art, particularly “Papel Picado,” the brand was created to convey a sense of homemade authenticity, friendliness, and approachability.

A warm colour palette, alongside bold rounded sans-serif and light sans-serif typefaces, were chosen to communicate warmth, energy, and comfort while keeping a playful and welcoming personality. The use of warm reds and yellows were chosen to help stimulate appetite. Meanwhile, the rounded typography softens the overall visual identity, making the brand feel more approachable and family-oriented while reinforcing a homemade feeling.
